9 Houses is a carefully curated compilation of nine single-family residences designed by Girish Doshi, a disciple of Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi. While his later work engaged with larger institutional scales, it is within these modest residential projects that the essence of his practice finds its most distilled expression. These houses, often realised within constrained means, embody a delicate negotiation between aspiration and resource resolving limitations not as constraints, but as opportunities for clarity and innovation. Central to this body of work is the exploration of Vishnu Paddhat, a construction methodology derived from the pioneering structural experiments of Vishnu Diwakar Joshi. Within the book, these principles are not merely described but are made legible through meticulously detailed drawings and high-resolution visual documentation, enabling a deeper technical and spatial understanding of each project. At Paragraph, the design of this book has been approached with the same ethos that defines the work: it presents clarity, restraint, and precision. The layout avoids excess, allowing the work to speak with quiet authority, while guiding the reader through a seamless narrative of process, thought, and outcome. In an Architectural milieu often driven by spectacle and novelty, 9 Houses stands as a measured and introspective body of work. Both the book and its design aspire to act as a catalyst demystifying architecture, foregrounding its social intent, and inviting engagement not through complexity, but through clarity. This publication is not just an archive of houses; it is a reflection on a way of practice where simplicity becomes a pursuit of beauty, and architecture, an enduring act of service.
