Abhayashram tells the story of an extraordinary Animal sanctuary in New Zealand, founded in 2002 when Shawn Bishop and Michael chose to leave behind lucrative careers to dedicate their lives to animals that had been neglected, exploited, and mistreated. In a world driven by profit, ignorance, and misplaced entertainment, countless animals suffer while a rare few, like Lucky the goat, Sparky the calf, Hoje the pig, and Nellie the lamb, find refuge and live out their lives with dignity and joy. Translated into Marathi by Dr. Mohini Vidwans; an Indian by origin, now settled in New Zealand; the book brings together Shawn Bishop’s remarkable journey and deeply moving encounters with these animals, offering stories that gently yet powerfully stay with the reader. For us at Paragraph, it has been a privilege at this stage of our journey to work on a publication so meaningful, sensitive, and humane one that stands for compassion, responsibility, and conscious choices beyond borders.
